Local minister, author launches congressional campaign

Local minister and author Alex Bryant has tossed his hat into the ring for a U.S. congressional seat.

Bryant, co-founder of Alex Bryant Ministries Inc., announced his candidacy yesterday for Missouri's 7th Congressional seat in the U.S. House of Representatives during an event at White River Conference Center in Springfield. The seat currently is held by U.S. Rep. Billy Long, R-Missouri, who is running for the retiring Roy Blunt's Senate position.

Bryant, who is known for a video on race relations that went viral in 2016 and hit nearly 50 million views, is running as a Republican on a platform of individual freedom, diversity of thought and family values.

“Our country is in the midst of a culture war. Even right here in southwest Missouri, there is an outright attack on our conservative family values and on the way we choose to raise our kids," he said in a video announcing his campaign.

An Evangel University graduate, Bryant worked in sales before transitioning to full-time ministry. After the video went viral in the wake of police officers being killed in Dallas, he and his wife, Angela, released a book called "Let's Start Again" exploring diversity and reconciliation, according to his website. He’s also served as an adjunct professor at Evangel University.

Alex Bryant Ministries is registered at a Nixa address with the Missouri secretary of state’s office.

Bryant joins a handful of other candidates vying for Long's seat in the House. Among them are Missouri state Sen. Eric Burlison and former state legislator Jay Wasson, according to past reporting.

I am never quite certain what politicians mean when they complain about something like "...our conservative family values and...the way we choose to raise our kids."

Conservatives have full control of our state legislature, and our congressional delegation. If there is a problem, then it falls on the shoulders of these conservative legislators. Too often politicians are willing to use scare tactics and inflammatory rhetoric, and this seems to be more of the same.
