Library District breaks ground on $7.7M auditorium

The Springfield-Greene County Library District held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a roughly $7.7 million auditorium on the south side of the city.

Hatch Auditorium at The Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave., is expected to open in February 2026, said Vickie Hicks, the Library District's community relations director. The Hatch Foundation, which made a naming-level donation for the project, was among organizations present at the ceremony.

"This auditorium will be a game-changer for our community, serving as a hub for educational events, cultural performances and a whole host of community gatherings," said Jessie East, Library Center branch manager, in comments at the ceremony.

Branco Enterprises Inc. is the construction manager at risk for the 9,340-square-foot auditorium designed by Sapp Design Associates Architects Inc., said Hicks. The project's guaranteed maximum price of $7.65 million was approved at the Library District board's last meeting, she said.

The Hatch Foundation contributed $600,000 to the Hatch Auditorium project, with $200,000 coming from Friends of the Library, according to a news release. Funding also comes from the Library District's $10.5 million American Rescue Plan Act allocation in 2022, with other district projects also being supported with that money.

Hatch Auditorium is planned with 500 seats at the west end of the Library Center. The Library Center currently has 13 meeting spaces, with the largest room fitting 100 people, East said.
