Letters to the Editor: Pros/Cons of Prop S

Posted online

Ahead of the April 2 election, officials connected to Springfield Public Schools penned letters to the editor arguing for and against Proposition S.

SPS is seeking an 18-cent increase to the debt-service levy to fund the first of three planned bond issuances for systemwide facility improvements. The $168 million bond request follows a similar $189 million proposal that failed in the April 2017 election.

Below are the letters to the editor, written by members of the Community Task Force on Facilities — which recommended the proposal — and a retired SPS teacher.

Prop S Pro: SPS building improvements vital to students, future workforce
—Marshall Kinne and Dr. Tom Prater, members of the Community Task Force on Facilities

Prop S Con: Buildings aren’t the answer to SPS’ problems
—Carl E. Herd, of Springfield, a retired SPS math teacher
