Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas announced he would file a lawsuit against the state of Missouri over a new police spending law.
Lucas argues the law requiring the city to spend more on police is unconstitutional. It raises Kansas City’s budget that must be devoted to the police department from 20% to 25%, according to the Missouri Independent.
Lucas cited a provision in the Missouri Constitution that prohibits the state from requiring a city to increase activity or service beyond that mandated by existing law, unless the cost is covered by the state.
