Grand Street underpass at MSU completed

Posted online

The Grand Street underpass project at Missouri State University has been completed after delays set construction back by a year.

Matthew Morris, vice president for administrative services at MSU, confirmed the tunnel opened today after President Clif Smart tweeted about it yesterday. In the tweet, Smart said the city of Springfield is expected to have the portion impacting Grand Street fully reopened next week.

Work on the $6.6 million underpass project, which connects MSU with campus parking lots, started in 2021, according to past reporting. Multiple delays pushed its estimated opening beyond its original May 2022 target.

Officials involved in the project have cited supply chain disruptions and geological issues, according to past reporting.

The issues led to a $2.8 million increase to the original project budget of $3.8 million, Springfield Business Journal previously reported.

Nabholz Construction Corp. served as construction manager at risk for the project, which replaced an existing underpass.
