GM, Ford cutting production at some plants

General Motors and Ford are temporarily idling or extending downtimes at several plants amid a semiconductor chip shortage.

Consulting firm AlixPartners estimates the chip shortage will reduce the global automotive industry's collective revenue by $60.6 billion this year.

The plant closures range from a week or two to several weeks.
