Project description: Up to 350 students will attend the new Delaware Elementary school that’s slated to open before the fall semester, said Springfield Public Schools spokeswoman Teresa Bledsoe. Plans call for a gymnasium that acts as a safe room, 14 classrooms, a library, art room, cafeteria and secured entrances, according to SPS planning documents. It also calls for nine special education classrooms. The project off of East Bennett Street is part of the $168 million Proposition S bond issue voters approved in April 2019. The previous elementary school was demolished at the site last summer, and students were relocated last year to the former Sherwood Elementary School.
