Evangel rolls out construction projects

Posted online

Evangel University has a trio of construction and renovation projects in the works to the tune of $1 million, with a promise of more to come.

A project featuring outdoor basketball courts with communal patio seating was unveiled this morning. The courts, themed after the university's new Valor mascot, and concrete patio tables and chairs are slated for completion in March 2022 in the open lawn space north of the school's student union, according to a news release.

Dake Wells Architecture Inc. is serving as architect for the project, which is funded by an undisclosed donor. Evangel spokesperson Erin Hedlun said the project cost is $700,000, with Nabholz Construction Corp. on board as general contractor.

The release further detailed projects that were announced on Facebook last month. Evangel is planning an upgrade to its student union to add communal seating, charging stations, a large LED screen, stage and Valor signage. A monument entry sign also is planning on Evangel property at the corner of Glenstone Avenue and Division Street.

“We want to create spaces on campus for students to enjoy community,” said Mike Rakes, who recently was inaugurated as Evangel's president, in the release. “One of my first initiatives as president is to enhance the student experience, and the construction of Valor courts, as well as other renovation and construction projects in the works, aim to do just that.”

Hedlun said Paragon 360 LLC is designing and facilitating the renovations to the student union with a budget of $225,000. The new signage is slated to cost $100,000, she said.

The release teased "additional projects" to be announced in the coming weeks.
