Downtown Springfield Association debuts new event

In time for Christmas, the Downtown Springfield Association is launching a new event.

Christmas Market on the Square, an open-air shopping attraction modeled after similar events nationwide, is slated to debut Dec. 11, according to a news release.

“There is something magical about a Christmas market, and we’re excited to bring this experience to Springfield,” said Jennifer Moseley, DSA event manager, in the release. “The Christmas Market on the Square is two weeks before Christmas Day, so this will be a great chance to pick up locally made gifts and support our city’s small businesses.”

The market is scheduled to be open noon-4 p.m. on the same day as the downtown Christmas parade. The DSA is banking on a couple thousand of the 10,000 people who typically attend the parade to make their way to the market, said DSA spokesperson Jeff Kessinger.

For the inaugural Christmas Market on the Square, participating organizations are Formed: An Artist Collective, Hawk's Popcorn and Pork Rinds, Meffy’s Buddy’s, Soap Refill Station, The Coffee Ethic and Xurros, according to the release. The DSA also will have a booth, and the Central High School choir program will provide live entertainment.

Kessinger said undisclosed booth fees have been kept low to help vendors cover their costs and hopefully turn a profit for the afternoon.

"Our biggest goal for this first year is awareness and exposure that will hopefully fuel growth for the event in 2022," he said via email.

As the event grows in the future, Kessinger said the DSA would like to see at least 10 businesses participate annually and for the market to expand to a few days around the Christmas parade.
