Downtown retail store to close

Posted online

A Cricket in the House LLC, a downtown home furnishings and gifts store in business since 2011, is closing up shop.

Owners Mark and Cricket Fries announced the closure on Facebook, indicating they plan to retire.

"We love our little shop and all our customers and friends, but we’re both anxious for some freedom to move on to our next chapter," the post reads. "Looking back over the past 11 years, we never imagined what A Cricket in the House would become. There’s been quite an evolution from the early days to what you see today."

The post stated the store, in leased space at 412 E. Walnut St., is slated to close by late March.

Product offerings include home furnishings, handmade and vintage gifts and collectibles, personal care products, jewelry and apparel. A Cricket in the House started out selling mostly furniture and expanded its product line as the years went on, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

In a 2019 interview with SBJ, Cricket Fries said the goal for the shop always has been to be affordable.

"We’re not a flea market, but we want it to be affordable, quality stuff,” she said.

Some of my favorite received gifts have come from A Cricket in the House. Thank you for your time, and happy retirement!
