Dirt 66 gets its start

Posted online

Dirt 66, a multimillion-dollar trail system around Fellows Lake in north Springfield, is officially open for business starting this weekend.

Stakeholders are scheduled to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. tomorrow near the pavilion at Miller Park, located just west of the Fellows Lake store, according to a news release from City Utilities of Springfield, a partner in the project with TrailSpring and other organizations.

Following the ribbon-cutting, a grand opening party will be held "to officially signify the completion of over 25 miles of natural surface trails for hiking and mountain biking," officials said in the release.

Work started on the $1.8 million project in fall 2020, according to past reporting.

TrailSpring, a 501(c)(3) agency founded by Matt O’Reilly, partnered with CU, Ozarks Greenways Inc. and Watershed Committee of the Ozarks Inc., along with sponsors and vendors, on the project, according to a July 26 Facebook post.

TrailSpring's mission is to improve the health and activity level of the Springfield area with multiuse trails. It focuses on mountain bike trails, which also are utilized by runners, hikers and bird-watchers. One of its past projects is Two Rivers Bike Park, a 15-mile mountain biking complex in Highlandville, according to past reporting.
