The Department of Justice filed suit against American Airlines and JetBlue.
The lawsuit alleges an alliance the companies created last year raised prices and reduced choices for passengers in the Northeast United States.
"The department cannot allow American Airlines to further consolidate the airline industry where competition is already in a critical shortage," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Richard Powers of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division.
