Crosstown food truck launches on south side

Posted online

Crosstown Barbecue Inc., a north-side staple for decades, is now in business on the south side.

Owner Steve Williams announced on Facebook late last month that a Crosstown food truck opened at 1265 E. Battlefield Road in the parking lot of a Pep Boys auto shop.

“We’ve had the longevity because we’re always having to reinvent ourselves for our customer base,” Williams said in an August 2020 Business Spotlight article in Springfield Business Journal.

Williams said via Facebook the food truck operates 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and the menu includes barbecue nachos and smoked turkey legs, which aren't available at the 1331 E. Division St. restaurant.

"We surely do love you. We thank you for 51 years of business," Williams said in a video posted to Facebook. "We'll treat you right, just like we treat you right at the restaurant."

Crosstown Barbecue was founded in 1970 by Williams' father, Jesse. The venue produced $250,000 in 2019 revenue selling smoked meats, ribs and sandwiches, according to past reporting.

"The same reason why people came here 50 years ago is the same reason they come today … good food and people," Williams said the SBJ spotlight article last year. “Springfield has exploded in the barbecue business in the last few years, but we’re still standing.”

At the time, Williams hinted at catering changes in the coming year.

Crosstown’s food truck opening was first reported by the Springfield News-Leader.
