CMH names new CEO

Citizens Memorial Hospital named a new CEO to succeed its outgoing leader.

Chief Operating Officer Michael Calhoun is slated to take the top role on Jan. 1, 2022, according to a news release. He'll also lead the CMH Foundation as executive director.

Calhoun will succeed Gary Fulbright, a nearly 40-year employee of the health care system who in early 2020 took over for longtime leader Donald Babb as only the second CEO in the organization’s history. Fulbright announced earlier this year he would retire at year's end.

Pat Douglas, CMH Board of Directors chair, said Calhoun was selected from "several excellent candidates" after a local and national search was conducted.

"We’ve had the opportunity to observe Mike’s leadership within the hospital in recent years and have been impressed with his collaborative and goal-centered approach," Douglas said in the release. "We were impressed with Mike’s enthusiasm and vision for CMH’s continued future growth, emphasizing the constant improvement of quality for our patients."

Calhoun will become CEO of a Bolivar health system with more than 2,000 employees and 2020 revenue of $522 million, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

At the CMH Foundation, Beverly Derrickson will continue to serve as chief operating officer and also will be a special projects coordinator for the hospital. A new hospital COO is slated to be announced at a later date, according to the release.

Calhoun called his promotion "an honor and privilege."

He added in the release, “It will be our focus to continue providing exceptional, patient-centered care and ensuring our local communities have access to the services and health care they need. The community has placed its trust in CMH to be there when they need us the most. We will continue building upon that trust as we improve and expand the health care services we provide."

A more than 22-year employee of CMH, Calhoun has held various roles, including a previous stint as administrative director of clinics.
