CFO issues $100K in coronavirus relief grants

In a virtual grant presentation, Community Foundation of the Ozarks on Friday issued nearly $100,000 in funding to help local nonprofits combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The nine nonprofit recipients are the first to receive funding from the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, a $1 million initiative announced last month, according to a news release.

“We are eager to see these funds start working to address the needs of our most vulnerable citizens during this crisis,” CFO President Brian Fogle said in the release. “Unfortunately, the requests coming in already are exceeding our current funding capacity. Our experience shows us that our region’s nonprofit community, especially in the rural Ozarks, can make these dollars go a long way."

SeniorAge Area Agency on Aging received the largest grant, at $25,000. The funds are earmarked for the nonprofit to provide wellness checks and meet nutritional needs for senior citizens who are in isolation or are food-insecure in cities across southwest Missouri.

The other nonprofits that received grants are:
• Community Partnership of the Ozarks Inc., $20,000 to provide emergency shelter to homeless people who are vulnerable to COVID-19;
• Elevate Branson, $10,000 to support Branson-area residents who are quarantined in extended-stay motels;
• Safe House for Women Inc., $10,000 to support domestic violence victims in the Cape Girardeau area;
• Christian Associates, $9,000 to buy and fill food boxes for Stone County residents;
• Dallas County Health Department, $5,000 to purchase supplies so officials can safely distribute food to at-risk residents;
• Harmony House, $5,000 to provide cleaning, hygiene and kitchen supplies for residents of the Springfield domestic violence shelter;
• University of Missouri Extension/Shannon County, $5,000 to support furloughed workers and residents over 65 years old; and
• Life360, $3,600 to help pay for child care at its Springfield preschool.

CFO grant announcements are expected to be made weekly amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to the release. Fogle previously told Springfield Business Journal $140,000 has been added to the fund through donations or commitments, with more expected soon.
