A local car wash company is in growth mode as its newest Springfield shop opened near the West Bypass and Chestnut Expressway intersection.
The third location for Blue Iguana Car Wash launched Sept. 16 at 3316 W. Chestnut Expressway, said Robin Byler, who co-owns the 8-year-old company with husband Greg.
“It’s a very busy intersection and there’s a lot of traffic there,” she said of the couple’s interest in opening in northwest Springfield.
Byler said the area is generally underserved by car washes, as only a Vroom Groom Car Wash operates nearby. The only one near Blue Iguana’s 4,600-square-foot size is a Mister Car Wash 4 miles away at the corner of Kansas Expressway and Sunshine Street, she said.
Springfield-based Fusion Consulting LLC was general contractor for the Chestnut Expressway project designed by St. Louis-based Levine Associates, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. Byler declined to disclose construction costs for the seven-employee car wash managed by Daniel Hinchcliff.
Blue Iguana debuted in 2013, when the Bylers bought a bankrupt car wash at 1640 E. Sunshine St. and made renovations before reopening it, according to past reporting. A second location was built and opened last year at 3155 S. Campbell Ave. The company previously operated eight car washes in the St. Louis area, Kentucky and Indiana but sold them in the past two years to Zips Car Wash.
Byler said the company plans to double its car wash total in the Queen City by next year. Locations are under construction at 4304 S. Fremont Ave., 1137 W. Kearney St. and 2118 E. Kearney St., she said, noting Fusion Consulting and Levine Associates are working on all three projects.
“I would gather that Fremont will probably open before the end of the year, followed by West Kearney, and then East Kearney will get renovated,” she said, noting the East Kearney property was formerly a Hurricane Bay Car Wash. “We always keep our fingers crossed, but hopefully in the next six months, they will all three be operational.”
Additional Blue Iguana stores are being considered, Byler said, adding the company has its eye on future possibilities in Nixa, Ozark, Republic and Willard.
“He’s always looking,” Byler said of her husband. “Every time he goes out of town, I jokingly say, ‘So, did you buy me a car wash?’”
The Republic School District is on track to open its Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth-grade students for the 2025-26 academic year.
