Blog: Big Blanket Co. blows through goal in new Kickstarter

Posted online

It’s a busy time for the local entrepreneurs behind the Kickstarter sensation Big Blanket Co.

Josh Stewart and Bryan Simpson already have their hands full working to relocate marketing and web design firm Hook Creative LLC to Commercial Street from downtown. With Big Blanket co-owners Dane Watts and Anthony Tolliver, Stewart and Simpson also launched a new project in their Big Blanket line.

Big Blanket’s newest crowdfunding campaign is for a weighted blanket that doubles as a comforter. The Kickstarter for the 30-pound, 100- by 120-inch product — called the XL Weighted Blanket — yesterday reached its $15,000 goal in just an hour. As of deadline this morning, 180 backers pledged $42,367 toward the project. Twenty-eight days remain on the Kickstarter.

The majority of the backers have signed on for the $229 tier, which includes the new blanket, a matching duvet, choice of color and free shipping.

According to the Kickstarter page, a standard weighted blanket is a 48-inch by 72-inch product that’s good for “cold toes”, “broken relationships” and “drying tears.” A somewhat comical image showing a comparison of the two makes the standard blanket look like it’s for children.

Big Blanket Co. made a splash in November 2018, when its original campaign that ended Jan. 7 brought in $94,286, or 943% above its goal of $10,000.

Also of note, it represents one of the investments Springfield native Tolliver is making off the professional basketball court. He’s also involved with local real estate development company Say You Can LLC.

The businessmen behind Big Blanket have tapped into one of those things that you didn’t know you needed until you saw it. As for Hook Creative’s new headquarters, Stewart told Springfield Business Journal a portion of the building is being considered for Big Blanket use.
