Jordan Essentials

For Americans who struggle to get good sleep, drugs are often the only solution – but some may be helped by a simple stick-shaped product made right here in the Ozarks. The magnesium essential oil infused sleep stick by Jordan Essentials is designed to help people sleep better and more safely with the help of aromatherapy and magnesium.

SBJ: What inspired the magnesium essential oil infused Sleep Stick?
Nancy Bogart: I started making the sticks for my migraines. We have a whole series of solutions, things like allergy, headache, energy and so forth. What I wanted to do with essential oils is to give people a solution that they can reach for before they have to move to a prescription, before they’ve got to move to even an over-the-counter drug, something more natural. And a lot of people don’t understand how to use essential oils – I have to get this dropper and that dropper and I’ve got to learn. You don’t with us, you pick it up, it says sleep, it helps you sleep. I’m a mom of four, I wanted quick solutions. I want it to be affordable, so it’s less than $20.

SBJ: How popular has the Sleep Stick become since you started making them?
Bogart: We started in my kitchen, and I was the only person in the whole world that sold it. We’ve sold these sticks in all 50 states, and with the help of a partner company, in nine different countries. We’ve probably made somewhere between 5 and 8 million of our sticks, including the Sleep Stick. That’s just me pouring little lotion bars in my kitchen. We did 40,000 for just one event last year. We still blend them by hand.

SBJ: Where are your products manufactured and how do you distribute them?
Bogart: They’ve been made in Nixa for all 25 years the company has been in business. Our primary distribution is through independent distributors that are in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and Saint Thomas, people there can sign up for distributorship. They make a commission, and we make the rest. Our distributors throw parties, they sell online, they have Facebook groups and even just sell person to person. It actually is technically never sold in a store.

SBJ: What other products are in your lineup?
Bogart: Our No. 1 best-selling product is our magnesium lotion, and we have that infused with peppermint or copaiba oil, which is a natural relaxant for people. We do shower gels, shampoos, Dead Sea salt soaks, mineral based makeup, skin care infused with botanicals and many other things. We have over 300 individual products in our catalog using phthalate-free fragrances and essential oils and everything comes with a spectrostatic study.

SBJ: What’s next for you and your sticks?
Bogart: We’ve been growing the last five years year-over-year in revenue. What we’re doing now is expanding. There are so many homes that don’t know about us across the country. We’ve been doing some investing in our distributors, so that we have more people who will come in and share the products. We try to stay very innovative, but we keep the classics because people count on them, they don’t go away.
