Following last week’s City Council vote in favor of a conditional use permit for Tie & Timber Beer Co., the owners have a concrete opening date in mind and are close to signing a tenant.
At 1451 E. Cherry St., Curtis Marshall and Jennifer Leonard are planning a microbrewery in one of two buildings, a former Kokomo Tans property. Marshall said yesterday the tentative opening date in the Rountree neighborhood is March 15, 2018.
“We’re hoping to start build-out in August,” he said. “If everything goes as planned, we should be brewing our first batch around Christmas time.”
In a special council meeting April 11 — when Ken McClure was sworn in as mayor — two bills to institute a conditional use permit for a microbrewery passed 7-0. Craig Hosmer abstained, citing his residency in Rountree, and Tom Prater was absent during the meeting held midday last Tuesday, according to Springfield City Clerk Anita Cotter.
A separate, vacant building on the property — formerly used by Ozarks Area Community Action Corp.’s Head Start program — will be used for a separate tenant. Declining to name the potential tenant, Marshall said negotiations should finalize within the next few weeks.
Marshall said Tie & Timber would launch with 12 beers and increase that count to 20 in the first nine months. He expects to hire five to 18 employees.
