The city of Springfield today announced its selection of Tim Smith as deputy city manager.

Smith, who has served as Greene County administrator since 2008, will succeed Fred Marty, who died of cancer in November. Smith's starting date is anticipated in mid-August, according to a news release.

Smith has worked with Greene County since 1992. At the end of 2013, he scaled back his hours to part-time and half pay to help the county deal with a budget shortfall, according to the release.

At the city, Smith will be paid a salary of $139,643. City Manager Greg Burris brings home a salary of $205,240.

For Springfield, Smith will report to Burris and will be responsible for completing an integrated plan proposal for meeting environmental standards. He also will direct the building development services, public works, human resources, planning and development, environmental services and information services departments.

City spokeswoman Cora Scott said there were 67 applicants for the positions and four finalists, whom Burris interviewed.

“Tim emerged from a strong pool of applicants. His experience and knowledge of the community make him a great fit,” Burris said in the release. “He will be able to hit the ground running without missing a beat.

"His skills and background will allow us to continue our momentum of re-engineering our development process and leading our cutting-edge environmental stewardship.”

Marty, who died at age 71, exited his post with the city in early November, citing health reasons. After his retirement, the city said it would split Marty's duties between Burris and Assistant City Manager Collin Quigley until a new deputy city manager was named, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.[[In-content Ad]]
