Senate approves Springfieldian as US attorney

The U.S. Senate yesterday approved the appointment of Springfieldian Timothy Garrison as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in January appointed Garrison to the role. The Senate received the appointment in February and put it into committee this month before the floor vote, according to Congress.gov.

Sen Roy Blunt, R-Missouri, applauded the unanimous decision.

“Tim Garrison has dedicated his career to making our communities and nation a safer place,” Blunt said in a news release. “As an assistant U.S. attorney, he has enforced the rule of law and taken hundreds of violent criminals off our streets. As a U.S. marine, he has served two combat tours and represented the interests of the U.S. government at the highest levels.”

Garrison, who previously served as assistant U.S. attorney in the district’s Springfield office, works mostly out of the district’s main office in Kansas City, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. He also was a 2016 honoree for SBJ’s 40 Under 40 awards.

Garrison succeeds Tom Larson, former acting U.S. attorney. Larson stepped in for Tammy Dickinson, who was asked to resign last year.

The U.S. attorney’s office for the Western District covers 66 of the state’s 114 counties, including the Springfield metropolitan statistical area. The office has both a civil and criminal division, according to its website.
