Primary delivers Blunt v. Kander and Greitens v. Koster to general election

Missourians voters yesterday set up a November face-off between Roy Blunt and Jason Kander for U.S. Senate, as well as Eric Greitens and Chris Koster for governor.

Blunt, the incumbent junior senator, received 480,878 votes, or 72.5 percent of the total in Missouri on the Republican ballot. His next closest Republican competitor, Kristi Nichols, took 20.2 percent of the votes, and Blunt also defeated Bernie Mowinski and Ryan Luethy, according to the unofficial results of yesterday’s election posted on the secretary of state’s website.

He’ll run against Democrat Kander, who earned 222,769 votes yesterday, or 69.9 percent. Cori Bush came in second, with 13.3 percent, and Chief Wana Dubie and Robert Mack came in third and fourth, respectively.

For governor of Missouri, Republican Greitens earned the primary nod with 236,250 votes, or 34.6 percent. John Brunner took second with 24.8 percent, followed by Peter Kinder and Catherine Hanaway.

On the Democratic side, state Attorney General Koster brought in 255,466 votes, or 78.8 percent for his gubernatorial bid, beating Eric Morrison, Charles Wheeler and Leonard Joseph Steinman II.

For the seventh district of the U.S. House of Representatives, incumbent Billy Long, of Springfield, defeated seven Republican challengers with 67,001 votes, or 62.4 percent. In the Nov. 8 general election, he’ll face Genevieve Williams, who received 9,401 votes, or 52.1 percent.

State executive branch
In the lieutenant governor race, Republican Mike Parson, of Bolivar, took home 331,067 votes, or 51.5 percent, to edge out Bev Randles. Democrat Russ Carnahan, son of former Gov. Mel Carnahan, won his party with 242,389 votes, or 75.9 percent, according to the election results.

Republican Jay Ashcroft, son of former governor, U.S. senator and attorney general John Ashcroft, got the nod for Missouri secretary of state with 400,906, or 61.3 percent. His Democratic challenger will be Robin Smith, who yesterday received 240,762 votes, or 77.3 percent.

In the state treasurer’s race, Republican Eric Schmitt ran unopposed and received 562,409 votes. Democrat Judy Baker won with 181,652 votes, or 59.3 percent of the total.

For state attorney general, Josh Hawley won the Republican ticket with 415,300 votes, or 64.2 percent. Democrat Teresa Hensley took first with 167,003 votes, or 52.7 percent, over competitor Jake Zimmerman.   

State legislative branch
David Sater, the incumbent Republican representing the 29th district, was the sole southwest Missouri state senator seeking re-election this year. Yesterday, he received 25,326 votes.

All 16 Springfield-area House districts will be on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The winner’s yesterday were:
    •    128: Republican Mike Stephens;
    •    129: Incumbent Republican Sandy Crawford;
    •    130: Incumbent Republican Jeffrey Messenger and Democrat Ella Goeppinger;
    •    131: Incumbent Republican Sonya Anderson and Democrat Nate Branscom;
    •    132: Republican Thomas Quinn and Democrat Crystal Quade;
    •    133: Republican Curtis Trent and Democrat Jim Clemmons;
    •    134: Incumbent Republican Elijah Haahr and Democrat Angela Pryor;
    •    135: Republican Steve Helms and Democrat Randy Alberhasky;
    •    136: Incumbent Republican Kevin Austin and Democrat Jeff Munzinger;
    •    137: Incumbent Republican Lyndall Fraker;
    •    138: Incumbent Republican Don Phillips;
    •    139: Incumbent Republican Jered Taylor;
    •    140: Incumbent Republican Lynn Morris and Democrat Jim Billedo;
    •    155: Incumbent Republican Lyle Rowland;
    •    156: Incumbent Republican Jeffery Justus; and
    •    158: Incumbent Republican Scott Fitzpatrick.

County positions
A handful of elected jobs were up for vote yesterday in Greene and Christian counties. All were Republicans.

For the Greene County Commission, Lincoln Hough won 77.7 percent of the votes to beat David Myers for the seat being left vacant by the retiring Roseann Bentley.

Incumbent Harold Bengsch ran unopposed for his commission seat and received 14,107 votes, according to the unofficial results at GreeneCountyMo.org.

Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott ran unopposed and received 30,471 votes, and Rick Kessinger kept his spot as county assessor with 21,859 votes.

In Christian County, Jennifer Growcock won the Circuit 38 Division 2 judgeship with 8,188 votes, beating competitors Kevin Elmer and Tony Brown.

Ralph Phillips got the nod for the Eastern District seat on the Christian County Commission, and Hosea Bilyeu won in the Western District, according to CCMoElections.com.

Current Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole defeated Warren Hagar with 85.6 percent of the votes.
