Orange Leaf franchisee to bring back Which Wich

Posted online
The local Orange Leaf franchisee plans to bring Which Wich back to Springfield.

Curt Bartell — who’s operated Orange Leaf at 1368 E. Republic Road for four years and in April opened a second at 1011 S. Glenstone Ave. — bought rights to Which Wich sandwich shops formerly operated by franchisee Lyle Armstrong for undisclosed terms. Armstrong’s two shops closed in January 2016.

“I bought all the equipment from the former owner, and we have it in our warehouse waiting for the location,” Bartell said, noting the rights he purchased do not cover the entire city.

The Orange Leaf franchisee plans two Which Wich shops in town.

Mirroring his Orange Leaf placements, Bartell seeks to lease 1,800 square feet in southeast Springfield for the first shop, which should open by October, and then secure a second location near Missouri State University. Each store will employ 15-20 people.

Bartell said the Which Wich concept fits well with his current self-serve frozen yogurt and snack offerings.

“It's exactly like Orange Leaf. That’s why I got into it,” he said. “You get to pick all your toppings, everything that you put on your sandwich. I like that concept.”

For Bartell’s latest Orange Leaf at Glenstone Avenue and Grand Street, he invested $350,000, including a $25,000 franchise fee.
