Tom and Lori Muetzel plan to open Ophelia’s for the third time, possibly as early as March, he said.
The Muetzels have identified a two-story, 3,600-square-foot building at 300 E. Commercial St. that’s undergoing renovations by new property owners Craig and Joe Hosmer. Tom Muetzel said the Ophelia’s on C-Street designs call for a speakeasy feel downstairs with a basement bar serving an extensive menu of absinthe, something Ophelia’s previously was known for.
“It’s in a very primitive state. One of the really cool things about the downstairs is these beautiful shot rock walls, which were part of the original construction,” Muetzel said. “You immediately get the idea of a speakeasy. It’s beautiful.”
The attempted renovation plan, to his knowledge, hasn’t been done before in Springfield. The couple plan to excavate about 2.5 feet to create a 9-foot ceiling, which is currently about 6.5-feet tall.
Another core feature is the master staircase, which currently is under design. Jazz music is planned on the weekends, he said.
The previous Ophelia’s at 216 E. Walnut St. closed in mid-2015 so Gailey’s Breakfast Cafe could expand into the space.
This will be the fifth bar and restaurant the Muetzels have opened and the third currently running. The couple also co-own Finnegan’s Wake and Sequiota Bike Shop.
