Vib Springfield
Part of the Best Western International Inc. portfolio of hotels, Vib Springfield began operations Aug. 10 with a grand opening celebration. Just east of Glenstone Avenue, the 92-room Vib – pronounced “vibe” – at 1845 E. Sunshine St. is the first Best Western hotel concept of its type to open in North America. According to city building permits, construction cost was $4.8 million for the six-story, 60,000-square-foot hotel, which features amenities such as free Wi-Fi in the lobby and guestrooms, 4K televisions in every room, gaming pods and a fitness center, said General Manager Jeff Portman. The Wheelhouse operates a full-service restaurant on the ground floor, incorporating local products from B + B Boulangerie & Bakery and KeenBean Coffee Roasters. Hotel developer Gordon Elliott of Elliot Lodging Ltd. opened only the second Best Western Vib property in the world. “He wanted to be a part of breaking the mold for hotels,” Portman said.

David Wenzel Salon LLC
After seven years working in the hair salon industry, David Wenzel has his own studio. He and business partner Jesus Arizaga opened David Wenzel Salon LLC on July 25 at 210 W. Republic Road, Ste. 116. The newly constructed building, owned by James Tillman with CES Holdings LLC and designed by Ireland Architects Inc., has two other tenant bays, Wenzel said, one of which is occupied by Arizaga Home, a home furnishings store also co-owned by the partners. Wenzel said he invested $200,000 in startup costs and signed a six-year lease for the salon at roughly $4,100 per month. The salon has Green Circle certification, a comprehensive recycling and sustainability initiative, and recycles 95 percent of its waste, he said. Wenzel said the 2,400-square-foot shop has nine employees, offering haircuts, styling, coloring, eyebrow and facial waxing, along with retail products from Wella, Eufora, Ouidad and GHD.

Little Danube LLC
Honoring his father’s escape from communism in Romania and immigration to America in the late 1980s, David Pruteanu opened Little Danube LLC, a restaurant focusing on Eastern European cuisine. Operations for the 900-square-foot eatery at 519 N. 21st St. in Ozark started July 28 after Pruteanu invested $25,000 in renovations. He signed a one-year lease for $1,250 a month with Chambers Properties LLC. With three employees, Little Danube serves specialties such as langos, a Hungarian deep-fried potato bread, stuffed cabbage rolls and chicken paprikash. Pruteanu partners with The Artisan’s Oven LLC on the dough, with most menu items in the $6.50-$10 range. Previously cooking classic French food for 12 years, Pruteanu said he trained under Pierre Chambrin, a former White House chef. Little Danube is Pruteanu’s first foray into restaurant ownership. “This was my dream since I was in high school,” he said.
