Sharks Surf X Supply
Two years after buying Lawrence, Kansas, Sharks Surf X Supply from Chris Cox, Steve and Megan Schoepflin chose Springfield for its second store. Started as a Midwest surf shop in 1989, Steve Schoepflin said they opened in Springfield on Feb. 16 at 301 W. Walnut St., formerly Queen City Cycles. He signed a one-year lease  for undisclosed terms for 2,500 square feet. The shop sells its own Sharks T-shirts for $22-$28 and hoodies for $52, as well as outerwear, shoes, hats and sunglasses in Vans, Ray-Ban and Reef brands. Schoepflin said Springfield’s resurging downtown was key in the move, after he considered Lincoln, Nebraska, Norman, Oklahoma, and Fayetteville, Arkansas. They spent around $100,000 to open the second store, he said, and the goal is for up to 10 stores in the Midwest. Schoepflin still resides in Lawrence and travels to Springfield once a week.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Springfield North
O’Reilly Hospitality Management LLC on Feb. 13 opened a Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott franchise at 2455 N. Glenstone Ave. It’s the company’s fourth Springfield hotel and 24th in the system, but its first Fairfield flag, said General Manager Jennifer Peterson. The 103-unit Fairfield was built for roughly $6 million, according to a city building permit, next door to O’Reilly Hospitality’s DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton. The company demolished a Budget Inn in 2014 to make way, and now it’s constructing a convention center between the DoubleTree and Fairfield for shared use. King and double queen-size rooms, with and without sofa beds, range from $88 to $239 in March, based on Marriott’s online booking platform. Peterson, who has worked seven years for OHM in her 17-year hospitality career, said the Fairfield has 27 employees. O’Reilly Hospitality also is building a Holiday Inn Express & Suites at the northwest corner of North Glenstone Avenue and Interstate 44.

Hurts Donut Co.
Hurts Donut Co. franchisees Steve and Shanna Dorlon opened a Branson store Oct. 11 at 1580 W. 76 Country Blvd., best-known previously as the Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Grill. The Dorlons are franchise veterans, having operated the Pearle Vision store in Branson the last 10 years. They spent upwards of $100,000 on renovations by Ava-based Wilber Enterprises/Build-Co., which handles infill work for all new Hurts Donut stores, Shanna Dorlon said. The Springfield-based franchise now has 17 stores in operation, with another seven in the works, she added. “We’re really the first store to go into a tourist market rather than a college market,” Dorlon said, noting they signed a 10-year lease for undisclosed terms with Springfield-based Morris Properties/Morris Oil Co. At 8,000 square feet, she said the Branson store is the largest in the Hurts Donut system. Sidney Roach manages the store’s 20 employees, and Dorlon said she’s hiring 10-15 more staff for tourism season beginning in March. Hurts officials have said franchise fees are $25,000 per location and annual royalties are 7 percent.
