A Newk's Eatery franchisee closed one of his two Springfield restaurants two months after opening the second location.

Dan Garrett, president of Danco LLC, opened the 2639 S. Glenstone Ave. Newk’s near Battlefield Mall in May 2012. A May 22 Facebook post indicated the restaurant closed following the opening of a second Newk’s at 220 W. Battlefield Road in March. Signage has been removed from the building owned by Simon Property Group Inc.

“Newk's Eatery is moving our Springfield operations into our brand new location to serve you better,” the Facebook post reads.

Newk’s spokesman David Hintz referred questions to Garrett and Springfield Operations Manager Brock Barton. Garrett and Barton could not be reached for comment by deadline.

The Newk’s on the northeast lot of Battlefield Mall marked the Jackson, Mississippi-based chain’s entry into Springfield and Missouri. Garrett at the time had plans to move beyond Springfield into Jefferson City, Joplin and Columbia. He’s also indicated plans to open another Springfield restaurant on the north side. The company's website does not list any other restaurants open or planned in Missouri.

Garrett invested $2.5 million to build the new Newk’s on Battlefield Road, where crews demolished the former Balboa Bed Co. to make way for the restaurant on land he owns. His Danco LLC also operates Newk’s franchise stores in Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi.
