Napleton Autowerks on the move from South Campbell

Napleton Autowerks Inc. plans to relocate its Queen City car dealership to northeast Springfield by April 2019, and a Missouri Department of Transportation roadway change has a lot to do with the move.

The company currently sells Porsche, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi brands on 8 acres and in 63,500 square feet of space at 3145 S. Campbell Ave., just south of Battlefield Road.

According to plans recently released by project architect Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc., Napleton Autowerks will begin construction in 30 days on two buildings totaling 40,000 square feet near the southeast corner U.S. Highway 65 and Division Street.

Key to the development plan is the rerouting of Eastgate Avenue. According to information provided by architect Geoffrey Butler, MoDOT is wrapping Eastgate around the north side of the Furniture Row property to run east behind it, before turning north and connecting with Division Street.

“That gets the intersection of Eastgate clear of the on and off ramps of U.S. 65,” Butler said in an email.

The city received a building permit request March 22 for one of the Napleton buildings: a 27,900-square-foot dealership and related site development work at 3508 E. Division St., according to filings in the Building Development Services Department.

Butler, Rosenbury & Partners is the architect of record, and Crossland Construction Co. is the general contractor, Butler said. An estimated cost was not disclosed. Other development parcels will be listed for sale, Butler said, identifying R.B. Murray Co. as the commercial broker.

A drawing prepared by civil engineer CJW Transportation Consultants LLC, titled “Eastgate Realignment for Commercial Development,” shows the current stretch of Eastgate north of Furniture Row converted into parking and greenspace.

MoDOT issued a notice it planned to close that section of Eastgate for nearly the entire month of April as private contractor APAC-Central Inc. of Fayetteville, Ark., completes the $3.5 million project. The estimated completion is for late June, according to MoDOT.

The property has long been owned by Noble Estates, and according to Greene County assessor records, the 12-acre parcel had a 2017 taxable appraised value of $1.3 million. Noble Communications branding agency, owned by Bob Noble, had used the 7,000-square-foot residential property on the site as a test kitchen in developing products for clients.

It has more recently been used as an art studio for Noble’s son, Brad Noble.

Butler said the Noble building was demolished after the Napleton group bought the land.

Napleton Equities LLC of Blue Island, Illinois, owns the dealership, which started as Lipscomb Auto Group. It sold to Best Automotive, a dealer holding company run by trucking magnate J.B. Hunt’s son, Bryan Hunt, at the time of Gary Lipscomb’s retirement in 2006.
