MSU renaming health center after Magers’ donation

Posted online

The Missouri State University Board of Governors today is scheduled to formalize the renaming of the school’s health and wellness center.

MSU officials recommend the board approve the name change to the Bill and Lucille Magers Family Health and Wellness Center from the Taylor Health and Wellness Center, according to the April 18 board agenda.

Andrea Mostyn, spokeswoman for MSU, said the health center in 1981 was named after Dr. William Taylor, its former director and college physician. The center is now led by Dr. Frederick Muegge.

Bill and Lucille Magers’ sons Bryan and Randy Magers contributed an undisclosed, naming-level donation to the health center. Bill and Lucille Magers are both deceased, according to the board agenda.

“Bill and Lucille didn’t just tell their sons about their core values, they lived them,” the agenda reads. “Hard work, integrity and generosity were practiced every day in the Magers home, and it is in that same spirit of generosity the Magers family is giving back to the university.”

MSU already installed new signage at the health center and changed the its website to reflect the name change.

The health center recently underwent a $13 million upgrade that doubled the space. It was dedicated April 9. In addition to the donation from the Magers family, the expansion was funded by a student fee covering bond payments.

Both Bryan and Randy Magers have development projects near MSU. In February, Bryan Magers was the sole respondent to the university’s request for information on the construction of a 400-bed dorm, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. Crews have razed Magers’ apartments on the site in preparation for the dorm construction.
