Eau Claire, Wisconsin-based home improvement retailer Menard Inc. is targeting a late summer 2018 opening for its west-side store across Sunshine Street from Springfield Plaza.
Rich Kramer Construction Inc. is general contractor for the Menards at 3705 W. Sunshine St., where excavating equipment is in place and dirt work is underway, said company spokesman Jeff Abbott.
“We are currently grading and preparing the site,” he said via email. “Although it’s still very early in the process, if all goes as planned, we hope that the Springfield east and west stores will be ready to open sometime in late summer 2018.”
Abbott declined to disclose the West Sunshine store’s planned square footage. No recent building permits are on file with the city; the latest permit for 3705 W. Sunshine was in October 2015 for public works improvements by Menards.
Green Bay, Wisconsin-based Immel Construction broke ground Oct. 25 at Menards’ east-side store at the corner of U.S. Highway 65 and Chestnut Expressway. The 200,000-square-foot store with a 48,000-square-foot detached warehouse has an estimated project cost of $6.7 million, according to a city building permit.
“Both Springfield stores are being built in our largest format with all the latest home improvement products,” Abbott added.
Menards owns 38 acres on West Sunshine and another 15 acres where workers are prepping the site at 500 N. Eastgate Ave., the former home of Hickory Hills Elementary.
