Meek’s centralizes operations with new board, executives

Posted online

Springfield-based Meek’s Lumber Co. is centralizing its operations with the formation of a board of directors, as well as the appointment of a new CEO and leadership team.

The change unifies the company’s two divisions over Midwest and West Coast operations and installs Charlie Meek, a fourth-generation Meek family member, as CEO. The company that produces $325 million in annual sales previously was led by separate decentralized management teams. Eric Sachse, general manager of Midwest retail operations, said Terry Meek previously led Midwest operations and his brother Bill Meek oversaw the West Coast division.

The new leadership team comprises:
    •    Charlie Meek, CEO, former general manager;
    •    Carrie Meek, chairwoman of the board, who stepped down from the day-to-day operations of the company and had a similar title as Charlie Meek on the West Coast;
    •    Mike Meek, chief financial officer;
    •    Matt Blair, president of West Coast operations;
    •    Sachse, general manager of Midwest retail operations; and
    •    Tom Buckner, general manager of Midwest special operations.

Third-generation family members Bill and Terry Meek retired and will serve as board members along with Carrie and Mike Meek, Sachse said. They’ll represent 40-plus shareholders who are members of the Meek family, he said.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the opportunity for this blended executive team to work closely with each other is going to produce outsized results,” Charlie Meek said in the release. “Collectively, we have worked very deliberately to develop and begin implementing a comprehensive strategy which will allow Meek’s to continue its growth as a leading building products supplier.”

Meek’s, which will reach 100 years in business in 2019, operates 46 lumberyards and nearly a dozen distribution centers, installed service outlets and other operations in four states: Missouri, Arkansas, California and Nevada. In the last 30 years, sales have grown to $325 million from $20 million, according to the release.

Charles Meek founded the company in 1919, Charles Meek Jr. relocated the company to Springfield in the 1930s and, in 1947, Meek’s opened its first lumberyard on the West Coast.
