Horrmann to open second Springfield shop

Posted online

Four years into operating its first Springfield store, Horrmann Meat Co. LLC is targeting a May opening in Fox Grape Plaza for its second location.

Seth Hoerman, co-owner of the German family-owned establishment, said the 3,300-square-foot space, 3250 E. Battlefield Road, Ste. 8, is roughly double the size of its Horrmann Meat Farmers Market near Hy-Vee and King Cash Saver at 1537 W. Battlefield Road.

“We’ve grown significantly over the last four years we’ve been there. We’ve about maxed out our space,” he said.

The company had been searching for an east-side location, and when The Grotto moved out of Fox Grape Plaza, Hoerman said the space met size and visibility requirements.

Horrmann Meat signed a five-year lease for undisclosed terms with Fox Grape Plaza LLC. R.B. Murray Co. brokered the deal, said Vice President Ross Murray. West Coast-style grill The Grotto’s second restaurant operated in the plaza for about eight months before closing in December.

Hoerman said the new shop would employ up to 10, bringing the company’s Springfield workforce to around 17. At the East Battlefield shop, the company plans to expand its offerings, particularly in prepared, take-home meals.

Horrmann Meat is known for locally sourced products, including brats and other meats, processed at the family’s plant in Fair Grove. Hoerman said suppliers include Missouri State University, JB Kobe Farms, Black Gate Farms and Ozark Natural Foods and noted the majority of the company’s meat products come from the 417 area.

At the processing plant, which opened in 2003, an expansion is wrapping up that would allow the company to operate another production line. Declining to disclose 2015 revenue, he said the company’s sales grew by roughly 20 percent from 2014.
