Greene County Collector Leah Betts’ office is reminding residents their personal property and real estate taxes are due to be paid by year’s end.
Betts told Springfield Business Journal the county typically collects $265 million annually.
The collector’s office usually brings in about 96 percent of real estate taxes and 91 percent of personal property taxes by the Dec. 31 deadline, Betts said.
“In a nutshell, you could say we collect about 94 percent of $265 million on time and we collect the majority of the rest throughout the year,” she said via email, noting the remaining portion comprising miscellaneous fees such as railroad and utility taxes are “usually collected on time.”
Betts said her office is receiving “trays of mail coming in as we speak,” so she was unable to provide exact numbers for this year’s taxes. Most bills were mailed Oct. 31.
Taxes make up $122.5 million of the county’s $161.5 million in revenue, according to the 2018 budget posted online.
