Gailey's to expand into Ophelia's space

Downtown eatery Gailey’s Breakfast Cafe, 220 E. Walnut St., will expand into its next-door neighbor Ophelia’s, prompting the closure of the restaurant and bar.

Property manager and Gailey’s co-owner Craig Wagoner, who also owns Brentwood Management, said he likely would renovate the 1,500-square-foot Ophelia’s space, 216 E. Walnut St., after the Seville Lofts building tenant closes shop June 19. However, no timeline is in place, he said.

Wagoner said it is unfortunate that Ophelia’s would not be able to maintain its business operations in that location.

“Unfortunately, there were two businesses that were doing well and needed to expand and there is not enough room for both of them,” he said. “I wish something could have been worked out. They were a good tenant.”

Gailey’s currently used Ophelia’s as overflow space for waiting customers on weekends.

Ophelia’s, co-owned by Anne Kim, recently announced the establishment would close its doors. The Facebook announcement said Wagoner decided not to renew the company’s lease after five years at the Seville Lofts building, and it gave the business 45 days notice to leave.

“The shortness of the notice most certainly leaves us without the proper time or resources to relocate in a manner that would allow us to responsibly find and relocate to a suitable address and remain in business. Though we feel Mr. Wagoner clearly had time to notify us in a more honorable manner, he denied a request by us for an extension to accommodate a timely exit so that we might be able to continue operations in another location,” the May 14 announcement reads. “We have had a responsible, cordial relationship with Mr. Wagoner and the residents of the Seville and simply did not see this coming.”

Calls to the business were not returned by deadline.[[In-content Ad]]
