Free Solo Coffee to close

Posted online

Free Solo Coffee Co. is slated to close at month’s end after less than a year in business.

The coffee shop and bakery operates at 3049 S. Fremont Ave. in the Fremont Center. Free Solo opened in April 2018, according to its Facebook page, filling the space that previously housed Legacy Bagelry & Bakery LLC. Missouri secretary of state records list Olivia Ross as the owner of Free Solo. A call to the shop this morning was not returned by deadline.

“It has been such an honor serving coffee and Springfield’s best gluten-free pastries, but we are entering into our last week of doing so,” a Jan. 25 Facebook post by Free Solo reads. “On Jan. 31, we will be closing our doors for the last time. Thank you all so much for the love and support you have shown us these last ten months! This has been an adventure that we’ll never forget!”

Free Solo's website indicates the company has direct-trade relationships with farmer partners in Guatemala.

Prior to Free Solo’s opening, Legacy Bagelry operated in the same spot before exiting in January 2017 amid a landlord change. Formerly The Mighty Bagel food cart downtown, Legacy started its brick-and-mortar presence on South Fremont in mid-2013, and following the landlord change, moved its wholesale operations to MJ’s Market and Deli, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

The building was purchased along with the nearby Heritage Cafeteria by Oak Grove, Illinois-based InSite Real Estate in October 2016.

That is sad. As an avid coffee drinking I hate to see any coffee shop closing. But I know owning a small business is hard. I will say that as a frequent visitor of coffee shops in 417 land I have never heard of this shop. I am sure there are others out there that I don't know about. Good marketing is so key to a successful small business.
