Drury brings on national speaker for Medicare discussion

Posted online

The Drury University Breech School of Business is scheduled to bring national speaker and author Wendell Potter to Springfield tomorrow.

Potter, an ex-insurance industry executive who’s now president of the Business Initiative for Health Policy public education and advocacy organization, is slated to deliver the keynote address at the free 12:30 p.m. event called Medicare For All at Lay Hall Auditorium, according to a news release.

“Health care continues to be a dominant concern for voters,” said Steve Mullins, professor of economics at Drury, in the release. “Prescription drug costs and health care reform were the two most important issues on the minds of voters prior to last month’s midterm elections.

“The Breech School of Business wanted to contribute to this critically important policy question by organizing a public event bringing together a nationally recognized expert like Wendell Potter with local representatives of Springfield’s health care providers.”

The author of “Nation on the Take” and “Deadly Spin” and founder of independent journalism group Tarbell.org, Potter previously worked at Humana and Cigna in public relations roles.

Following his keynote address will be a panel discussion with:
    •    Matt Aug, president of Cox HealthPlans;
    •    William Mahoney, president and CEO of Cox Medical Center Branson;
    •    Dr. Jim Rogers, internal medicine specialist for Mercy Springfield Communities; and
    •    Adam Whitten, director of primary care transformation for Mercy Springfield Communities.
