CoxHealth to address opioid addiction via $790K grant

Posted online

CoxHealth has another avenue to battle the well-documented opioid epidemic: a $790,395 grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration.

With the funding — to be issued over a three-year period — the Springfield-based health care system is adding telemedicine equipment for behavioral health patients at rural clinics. Patients will be able to communicate virtually with physicians on mental health treatments, substance abuse counseling and chronic disease management services, according to a news release issued this morning.

“While opioids can help relieve pain, abuse and addiction to them is a rising concern across the country and in our region,” said Lisa Alexander, president of the CoxHealth Foundation, which secured the grant, in the release. “We believe that this initiative is another way to link patients to the best methods of addressing both their physical and mental pain so they can return to a healthy life, stopping potential abuse before it starts.”

CoxHealth officials estimate it will serve more than 2,500 patients at 11 clinics in Branson, Monett, Aurora and five other communities with the grant funding.

The program that began rolling out late this year represents an expansion of CoxHealth’s primary care behavioral health program, according to the release.
