Cox Branson breaks ground on $31M project

Posted online
Cox Medical Center Branson broke ground yesterday on a construction and renovation project carrying a price tag of roughly $30.8 million.

The 60,000-square-foot project at the former Skaggs hospital includes a new emergency department and an expanded coronary care unit, according to a news release.

“Branson is a growing community and the number of patients we serve is also increasing. The expansion of our ED and CCU will allow us to expedite the treatment of our patients, and get them back to enjoying the many exciting amenities our community has to offer," Cox Branson President and CEO William Mahoney said in the release.

Funding for the project comes, in part, from an April bond issuance of $200 million, the majority of which is paying for a $130 million tower at CoxHealth's south Springfield flagship hospital.

CoxHealth President and CEO Steve Edwards said the expansion projects are well-timed, given the historically low interest rates at the time of the bond issuance.

“We knew there would likely never be another time when expansion would be so affordable," Edwards said in the release. “Rates have increased 1.5 points since we issued our bonds. If we financed today, the bond issuance for our projects in Springfield and Branson would cost $42 million more due to the rate increase.”

CoxHealth's late 2012 merger with the former Skaggs Regional Medical Center included a clause for the Springfield health system to invest in the Branson hospital to better serve residents of Taney and Stone counties.

In the construction project, workers will demolish Cox Branson's Medical Plaza Two building to make way for a three-story, 42,000-square-foot addition to the hospital and a renovation of 18,000 square feet of existing space. The project includes third-floor shell space for future expansion, according to the release.[[In-content Ad]]
