Flooding continues after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and Louisiana over the weekend. The high waters in Texas are expected to force over 30,000 people from their homes, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which also anticipates 450,000 disaster victims to file for assistance.
Springfield-based nonprofit Convoy of Hope is among organizations sending aide to affected areas.
Set up in Corpus Christi, Convoy of Hope is delivering mobile command centers; trucks full of water, food and hygiene supplies; and work trucks containing chainsaws, wheelbarrows and shovels.
"We will work with local partners to establish greatest areas of need and potential distribution sites," said Stacy Lamb, Convoy of Hope’s U.S. response director for disaster services, in a blog post.
Facebook posts by the nonprofit show workers unloading pallets of supplies out of Convoy of Hope trucks, and the organization also is accepting online donations.
Another Springfield-based organization, Assemblies of God, has nearly 40 churches in the cities of Corpus Christi and Houston. The church encouraged its ministers and church members to evacuate ahead of the slow-moving storm, according to its website. Convoy of Hope is working with Assemblies of God to help out.
Guest columnist Donnie Brawner says many entrepreneurs stray from their original business ventures, which is often a recipe for success.
