City’s sales tax revenue comes in above projections

For the city’s fiscal year, sales tax revenue is 2 percent higher than officials expected.

The city of Springfield’s January sales tax check from the Missouri Department Revenue exceeded projections.

At $4.4 million, the check was 6 percent higher than the $4.2 million city officials previously predicted for the month, according to a news release.

“We were pleased to see revenues rebound after a below-budget December,” Springfield Finance Director David Holtmann said in the release, referencing a check last month that was 4 percent short of projections.

For the fiscal year that started July 1, sales taxes for Springfield reached $27.4 million through January. That’s 2 percent higher than city budget officials expected the amount to be during the period.

The January check represents sales processed by the state in December from transactions made mostly in November, according to the release.

Springfield uses sales tax revenue from the Department of Revenue to fund the Police and Fire departments and other public services. Roughly 56 percent of the city’s general fund comes from sales and use taxes.
