CAC’s Over the Edge fundraiser falls 23% short of 2017

The final tally is in, and Child Advocacy Center brought in 23 percent less than last year during its third-annual Over the Edge fundraiser.

CAC Development Associate Lisa Langley said the June 2 event — and subsequent fundraising by participants throughout last month — netted more than $180,000, less than the $235,000 brought in by the rappelling event in 2017.

“That is a super busy weekend and lots of people were out of town since it was the weekend after Memorial Day,” Langley said via email. “We are moving the event to the second weekend in June next year, to try to get away from the holiday and busyness of that first weekend in June. We hope that will help.”

A partnership with Halifax, Nova Scotia-based Over The Edge, the fundraiser sends rappellers down Sky Eleven downtown to raise money for the children’s charity.

This year, 73 people rappelled down The Vecino Group’s 10-story apartment building, according to a news release. That’s one less than the number last year, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

Also on June 2, during CAC’s annual Diamonds in the Sky dinner, the nonprofit gave the John P. Ferguson Award for Child Advocacy to members of the Ferguson family. The award is named in honor of Dr. John P. Ferguson, who was the first physician to provide forensic and medical exams for sexually abused children in the area.

“The Ferguson family’s work has had a positive and lasting impact on the lives of thousands of children. The original spark of passion for our mission, lit by Dr. John P. Ferguson, continues to impact abused children in our communities and will for years to come,” said Linda Saturno, CAC executive director, in the release.

Last year’s recipient was SRC Holdings Corp.
