Branson Convention Center projects lower net losses

Branson Convention Center officials are expecting a better bottom line in both 2018 and 2019 — though net losses are still the norm.

The city-owned convention center attached to a Hilton hotel has posted net losses since opening in August 2007, and while that’s still the case, the losses are narrowing. The Branson Board of Aldermen is scheduled to vote tomorrow on the convention center budget, which includes the projections.

For 2018, officials predict a net loss of $280,329, compared with a loss of $444,997 in 2017. In 2019, losses are expected to be $264,974, according to the board’s agenda.

The convention center is expected to end the year with $4.7 million in revenue, a roughly 4 percent increase compared with $4.4 million in 2017. Officials are projecting $4.9 million in 2019 revenue.

Rental revenue, expected at $500,000 in 2019, is projected from scheduled events that include the Branson Shootout Futsal Tournament, Branson Comic Con and the Branson Collector Car Auction, according to the board notes.

The convention center historically has been a loss leader for the city. A 2011 study, the most recent on record, put its annual economic impact at $16 million, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
