Springfield-based BKD LLP penned a deal to buy a portion of Grant Thornton LLP, a larger firm based in Chicago.

Through the agreement for undisclosed terms, BKD will pick up one partner and 16 employees from Grant Thornton’s audit and tax practices in Wichita, Kansas. The purchase is expected to close June 1, according to a news release.

The employees are slated to join BKD’s existing Wichita office.

“The combination of our two practices allows us to enhance our service and provide even more long-term advancement opportunities to our combined staff,” said Bill Pickert, managing partner for BKD in Wichita, in the release. “The Grant Thornton practice brings a deep bench of experience and capabilities to our team and a tremendous group of clients.”

BKD ranked 12th last year on Inside Public Accounting’s list of the top U.S. firms, with $564.4 million in annual revenue. With $1.7 billion in revenue, Grant Thornton placed sixth on the list.

“BKD is an impressive firm with a sterling track record of quality client service; by adding members of our talented team, BKD will be even better positioned to serve the Wichita business community,” said Dan Powers, office managing partner of Grant Thornton in Wichita, in the release. “Grant Thornton will continue to provide professional services in Wichita. This sale allows us to focus on providing core clients and industries with advisory, tax and audit services that are aligned to our market strategy.”

BKD, which has grown its fiscal year revenue to roughly $600 million, operates 36 offices in 16 states, according to the release. It employs 2,650 people and 280 partners.

The partial acquisition deal with Grant Thornton follows BKD’s purchase early this year of Houston, Texas-based Harper & Pearson Co. PC's financial institution practice.
