3M’s Springfield plant manager accepts corporate job

Posted online

St. Paul, Minnesota-based 3M Co.’s (Nasdaq: MMM) Springfield plant manager accepted a job with the corporate office.

Frederick James, who’s led the local plant for three years and worked with 3M for nearly 17 years, will become a global value stream manager overseeing multiple manufacturing plants for the conglomerate that produces adhesives and other products.

“Instead of having responsibility for all the production at one site, it’s focused on a specific segment of the business,” James said.

James likely will start in the first quarter after his successor in Springfield is named. He’s not involved in the selection process for the next manager in Springfield, he said.

In Springfield, James has spearheaded a $40 million expansion 3M started in the spring. The company is expanding into the former Mammoth HVAC manufacturing plant it owns north of its Queen City operations at Chestnut Expressway and U.S. Highway 65. The company announced it would add 92 jobs as it expands the local production of adhesive-based products, including sealants, sprays and structural adhesives for the aerospace industry.

“We’re on track to have it fully wrapped up by the end of next year,” James said, noting 3M is halfway finished with the hiring process. “We’re incrementally going through and making changes to the building.”

In its latest quarter, 3M improved its net income by 7.5 percent to $1.5 billion, according to a news release.

The company’s shares were trading at $229.77 as of 10:45 a.m., compared with a 52-week range of $165.84 to $238.90.
