2009 Most Influential Women Honoree: Tammy Mast

Posted online
Leadership is a hands-on affair for Tammy Mast, community liaison for Integrity Home Care.

"I don't feel a true leader can delegate everything," Mast says. "They must be present, roll up their sleeves and jump in. There cannot be any disconnect between the leader and the people they are leading."

At the same time, that connection has to be balanced with group participation.

"Brainstorming for new ideas and someone playing devil's advocate helps with the buy-in by groups of people because they become a part of the process," she says.

Mast's passion to help others brings out what she considers a defining character trait: her desire to make things better, whether it's an event, a procedure or a particular situation.

With Integrity Home Care, that means communicating the role and mission of home care to potential clients, referral sources and the community to enhance understanding of home care's benefits. But her efforts to improve and enhance go well beyond the workplace.

Serving on the board of directors of Leadership Springfield, Mast led the effort to revamp the entire class selection process. She also serves as sponsorship chairwoman of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women event and is a member of the board of directors for Springfield Lutheran School.

Mast also is active with Rotary Club of Springfield Southeast and a member of the advisory committee for Council of Churches Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, as well as chairwoman of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce's Nonprofit Executive Roundtable.

While each of those positions has afforded opportunities to have a direct impact on the community, she also has influenced the success of individuals through the Association of Fundraising Professionals, where she has served in a variety of positions ranging from program chairwoman to organization president.

As AFP's program chairwoman, Mast said she led "a concerted effort to think outside the box for programs to expose colleagues to new ideas and equip them with resources to not only better their organizations, but themselves as well."

She also actively encouraged young AFP members to seek out mentors to aid in their own development.

"Finding a mentor is one of the most valuable relationships you'll ever establish," she says.

Among Mast's proudest accomplishments is her work with the GYN Cancers Alliance, established by Joy Lamberson-Klock.

Serving as executive director of the group 2002-08, she was essential in developing the organization.

"During that time, the organization's budget and the number of women partnered with a peer mentor grew fivefold," she says.

The organization also successfully headed up a collaborative effort with eight other agencies to educate the community about the human papillomavirus, its relation to cervical cancer, and the new HPV vaccine.[[In-content Ad]]
