MSU board offers Smart contract incentive

Posted online
The Missouri State University Board of Governors voted to pay Clif Smart yearly incentive pay to encourage the school president to stay on through the extent of his contract.

Starting June 30, Smart will receive a 1.8 percent salary increase - on par with other faculty and staff - as well as a bonus of $50,000 per year, according to a news release. Last year, the board voted to extend Smart’s contract through June 30, 2022.  His fiscal 2015 salary was $300,000.

“I know he is not driven by money alone, but we hope the incentive clause will keep him here for the duration of his contract in 2022,” MSU Board Chairman Stephen Hoven said in the release.

Smart said he plans to use the bonus pay to create an endowment at the end of his tenure.

“I love my job and plan to remain as president through the duration of my contract and hopefully beyond,” said Smart, who joined MSU as general counsel in December 2007, was named interim president in June 2011 and took on the job permanently in October 2012.

During its executive retreat on July 30, the board also voted to award MSU Provost Frank Einhellig the University Leadership Chair.

Einhellig, who earned $217,413 in fiscal 2015, will receive $2,500 per year in supplemental pay during the extent of the two-year designation, according to the release.

Prior recipients of the endowed chair are Jim Baker and Mike Nietzel.
