AT&T bringing gigabit internet to Springfield homes

Posted online
Following the deployment of 1-gigabit broadband service to Springfield businesses last year, AT&T is following up by expanding the internet service to area homes.

The high-speed service in Springfield is among AT&T’s plans to reach 75 metropolitan areas nationwide. Currently, the AT&T broadband service is active in 52 markets, according to a news release.

“The announcement means commitment,” AT&T spokeswoman Katie Nagus said via email this morning, noting there is no time frame to roll out the service in Springfield. “In determining where to invest, we are focused on markets within our local service territory where we already provide home phone, internet and TV services.

“Then we look for the communities within these markets that demonstrate the strongest investment cases based on the network, anticipated demand and a willingness to adopt the most receptive policies.”

Declining to disclose AT&T’s investment to expand its Springfield service, Nagus said AT&T already has spent more than $70 million on wireless and wired networks in the area between 2013 and 2015.

In Springfield, she said customers would pay $80 per month for 1-gigabit speeds.

Last year, Mediacom Communications Corp. (Nasdaq: MCCC) launched project Open Road – a $1 billion, three-year commitment to expand the company’s 1-gigabit broadband service. Locally, that effort is targeting 2,000 buildings. In 2015, Suddenlink Communications chose Nixa as one of its first five markets to receive 1-gigabit broadband service, and City Utilities-owned SpringNet is expanding its business gigabit service, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
