Scooter’s Coffee franchisee nears site selection

Posted online

The husband-and-wife franchisees in the Springfield area for Scooter’s Coffee are nearing a site selection for their first shop.

Mary Rolf said she and her husband John - a property casualty broker with AmWins - are sending out letters of intent to potential landlords this week as they eye three spots on Springfield’s south side. The couple, who signed a franchise agreement with the Omaha, Nebraska, drive-thru coffee chain last month, have a 3.5-year plan to open four stores in the Queen City and one in Nixa. The development plans originally were reported by the Springfield News-Leader.

“We’re looking in Springfield to build the brand name,” Mary Rolf said, noting the Nixa store likely would be the third the couple opens. “We love coffee and we love convenience. There’s just not many drive-thru places around here.”

The couple is targeting an October 2017 opening for the first store. Rolf said the location would be a 450-square-foot drive-thru kiosk in an underutilized parking area at a high-traffic commuter area. She declined to identify the three target properties.

Rolf said the initial investment for a Scooter’s franchise store is around $400,000, with ongoing royalties of 6 percent and a 2 percent fee for advertising. The Nebraska chain operates more than 150 stores in 13 states.

In Springfield, competitor Starbucks has three drive-thru locations, according to its website, and Panera Bread has added two others with a third in the works. Rolf welcomes the competition.

“We’re not really scared,” she said. “Competition can be good and it can be bad. It’s going to motivate us.”

Three other Starbucks stores appear to be in the works in Springfield.

At Branson-based HCW LLC’s 1008 E. Battlefield Road retail center, the company lists a Starbucks as one of the tenants at the former Back Yard Burgers site.

Acquired in 2015, Jared Enterprises plans a multimillion-dollar renovation for the Brentwood Center and the addition of a freestanding Starbucks, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

Construction is ongoing (see below) on a second building on land adjacent to the recently opened Zaxby’s restaurant. Jason Pullman, who opened the chicken eatery, has said he and business partner Jeff Hebbel were negotiating a lease with Starbucks at the second 2,000-square-foot building. Pullman has not returned recent calls on progress of the development.
