CU board declares old transit station as surplus property

Posted online
The Board of Public Utilities yesterday voted unanimously to declare City Utilities’ former downtown bus transfer station a surplus property, a key step in selling it.

“This just now really kicks in the process of being able to put the property on the market and go through the bidding process,” CU spokesman Joel Alexander said, noting the station likely would be listed in late July or early August.

Alexander said the CU governing board hasn’t yet reached an asking price for the 301 W. McDaniel St. property, but it would be listed at fair market value.

The city of Springfield has first right of refusal to buy the property, he said.

The Springfield utility provider cut the ribbon May 6 on its new $4.4 million, 5,859-square-foot bus station at 211 N. Main Ave.

The old station at McDaniel Street and Patton Avenue had been in use for nearly three decades.
