Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Discount Tire is launching its first Springfield store a year after entering Joplin.
The 900-store chain is targeting a December opening at 3670 S. Glenstone Ave., said Preston Snavely, project manager for general contractor DeWitt & Associates Inc. The Springfield company also served as contractor for Discount Tire’s first store in Joplin, which opened last fall.
DeWitt & Associates demolished a former Kawasaki utility vehicle shop - which relocated to Ozark - in late June to make way for the Discount Tire store. The contractor broke ground in mid-July.
Snavely, who declined to provide an estimated cost of the store, said the building would be 10,000 square feet. Anaheim, Calif.-based Plump Group designed the project. A Discount Tire official could not be reached for comment by deadline. Springfield Building Development Services Director Chris Straw said the estimated cost of the project is $950,000.
According to the company’s website, Discount Tire operates five stores on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metropolitan area in addition to the Joplin location. The roughly 56-year-old company sponsors NASCAR and motocross events and sells tires and wheels for a variety of vehicles.
Connected to Watkins Elementary School is a new storm shelter now under construction.
